Mark‐resight estimates of seasonal variation in harbor seal abundance and site fidelity

Abstract: Monitoring trends in abundance of pinnipeds typically involves counting seals at terrestrial haul-out sites during the breeding season. Counts of seals made at other times of the year are typically lower; however, it is often unknown whether this is because fewer animals are present or whether lower counts simply reflect a reduction in haulout probability. Here we illustrate how photo-identification data from an individual-based study of harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) can be used to estimate seasonal variation … Show more

“…This agrees with other harbour seal studies, in which fidelity for particular haulout sites was high (Cordes & Thompson, 2015;Dietz et al, 2013). This resulted in disturbance not being an explanatory factor in the final transition model.…”

“…However, surveys during the breeding season in both the Moray Firth (Cordes & Thompson, 2015) and The Wash and South East England (SCOS, 2017) show that the breeding-season distribution is similar to that of the moult. “…There is evidence of strong fidelity to moulting and breeding sites (Bowen, Ellis, Iverson, & Boness, 2003;Cordes & Thompson, 2015;Härkönen & Harding, 2001), providing opportunities to observe and count individuals during these two important periods in the annual cycle (Thompson, Tollit, Wood, et al, 1997). “…Outside this period shooting numbers were treated as missing data and estimated during model-fitting (Matthiopoulos et al, 2013). In 2009, a mark-recapture estimate for Loch Fleet (Cordes & Thompson, 2015) was scaled up to the full region using aerial survey data. In 1993, an estimate was based on onshore counts, corrected using telemetry data to estimate the proportion of animals in the water (Thompson, Tollit, Corpe, Reid, & Ross, 1997).…”
