Maritime Empty Container Repositioning

Abstract: Maritime shipping containers are important to a number of different industries as they facilitate the reduction of transportation costs. To address the needs of shippers, empty containers need to be repositioned globally between seaports. Since the cost of empty container repositioning (ECR) constitutes a significant element of the total cost of running a global container fleet operation, the problem has been receiving increasing attention from scholars. The diversity of this literature necessitates the develo… Show more

“…Tang et al [23] considered the sharing of containers, built an optimization model for empty container transportation with the goal of the lowest total cost, and took China Railway Express as an example to conduct research. Khakbaz, Bhattacharjya [24] reviewed the relevant research on the cost of empty shipping containers and analyzed the future development trends and possible research directions. Shintani [25] discussed the planning of the container transportation network while considering the dispatch of empty containers.…”

“…Then, Song et al [9] studied the empty container repositioning strategy under the condition of flexible destination port, and evaluated the effectiveness of the strategy through simulation. Khakbaz and Bhattacharjya [10] provided a comprehensive literature review about maritime empty container repositioning, and trends and potential research directions were examined. Zheng et al [11] considered the coordination between liner carriers, and used the reverse optimization method to optimize the cost of empty container repositioning.…”
