Among the multiple determinants of marital satisfaction, evidence points to the social skills of married couples. This study investigates the correlations between these constructs, cross-correlating data from husband and wives. A total of 406 married individuals, 188 men and 218 women, completed the Marital Satisfaction Scale, Social Skills Inventory (SSI-Del-Prette) and Marital Social Skills Inventory (MSSI-Villa&Del-Prette). The results revealed a significant correlation among the scores of the three instruments, confirming the relationship between marital satisfaction and the social skills of married couples. In the cross-correlations, three classes of marital social skills (proactive self-control, reactive self-control and expressiveness/empathy) were more strongly correlated to husbands’ marital satisfaction, and husbands’ three social skills (assertive conversation, self-assertiveness and expressiveness/empathy) were correlated with wives’ marital satisfaction. Gender differences concerning the importance of one spouse’s social skills leading to the other spouse’s satisfaction are stressed as an item to be used in detailed diagnostics and effective interventions with couples. Some issues for future research are also discussed.

O s relacionamentos íntimos são aspecto central da vida adulta e a qualidade dos mesmos tem implicações não só na saúde mental, mas também na saúde física e vida profissional de homens e mulheres. Em vista disso, ao longo do século XX, os pesquisadores demonstraram interesse crescente em compreender a vida amorosa e conjugal, bem como avaliar a qualidade desses relacionamentos. As Satisfação conjugal em casamentos de longa duração: uma construção possível AbstractMarital satisfaction in long lasting marriages: a feasible construction. Marital relationship is related with couple's health and quality of life, especially during the adulthood and the aging years. However, the fact that a marriage is long lasting, does not mean it is necessarily satisfactory to the partners. This paper aims to identify the processes and variables associated to satisfaction in long lasting marriages (those longer than 20 years). Thirty eight couples from São Paulo, Brazil, answered a set of questionnaires used previously in multicultural studies carried out in Sweden, USA, Germany, Canada, Netherlands, South Africa, Israel and Chile. In about half of these couples, at least one consort was found satisfied. Comparing satisfied and unsatisfied couples, it became clear that higher levels of satisfaction are found among couples who have adequate strategies for problem solving, proximity, cohesion, good communication skills; who are religiously active and satisfied with their economical status.

Society imposes different roles on women and men in the family and the society, concerning their gender. "Gender Role Concept" is very important in terms of the fact that it is related all parts of life of individuals, behaviors, perceptions and attitudes of men and women (Çelik, 2008). In this perspective, gender roles, which affect individuals' lives, cannot be isolated from the factors which affect marriage. In this context, the reflections of gender roles on marriage and also the effects of marriage, which is one of most important decisions of individuals, on quality of life were explored. For this purpose, the relationships between these three concepts were discussed. This research was a study of the relational model. The universe of this study included married individuals living in the province of Bayburt and Erzurum, and 639 individuals were participated to the research which was voluntary basis. The data were collected by using the "Marital Life Scale", "Gender Roles Attitudes Scale" and "Life Satisfaction Scale". These analyses were made on the data obtained from the study; t-test for independent groups, regression and correlation. According to study a positive and significant relationship was found between the marital quality, gender roles and the life satisfaction. There was found a significant differentiation; between the quality of the marriage and having children or family intervention; between the attitudes towards gender roles and gender, spouse's employment status or having children; between the life satisfaction and gender or spouse's employment status. El concepto de "roles de género" es muy importante dado que se relaciona con todas las partes de la vida, conductas, percepciones y actitudes de hombres y mujeres . En esta perspectiva, los roles de género, los cuales afectan a la vida de las personas, no pueden ser aislados de los factores que afectan el matrimonio. En este contexto, este artículo explora la reflexión sobre los roles de género en el matrimonio, como una de las decisiones más importantes de la persona, y también los efectos del matrimonio sobre la calidad de vida. Para este objetivo, las relaciones entre estos tres conceptos fueron discutidos. y se presenta un modelo relacional.
