Psychologists' efforts to understand love began in the mid-twentieth century. The fact that they continue apace in the twenty-first century reflects increased awareness of the importance of love to understanding relationship phenomena and acknowledgment that an understanding of love has yet to be achieved. This article (a) describes one source of increased recognition that the present confusions surrounding love must be transcended if progress is to be made in understanding many relationship phenomena; (b) discusses the failure to explicate the love construct, which constitutes the major obstacle to the study of love phenomena; (c) discusses the need for a temporal model of love in relationships; and (d ) suggests that it is important to consider the presence or absence of four types of love, each of which appears to be associated with different causal conditions and thus is likely to have a different temporal course as an adult relationship moves through time.1

RESUMO -O objetivo deste trabalho é rever as principais tendências e mudanças, metodológicas e conceituais, da psicoterapia de casal, indicando a origem das abordagens e as mudanças na compreensão do objeto, métodos e modelos psicoterapêuticos. O foco metodológico foi construído a partir das revisões publicadas sobre a psicoterapia de casal, indexadas ao "PsycLit" e acessadas por meio do sítio da CAPES em agosto de 2006. Diferentes abordagens metodológicas e teóricas da psicoterapia de casal são descritas e vinculadas a diferentes períodos históricos. São apontadas contribuições recentes a partir de perspectivas feministas, transculturais e pós-modernas. Tentativas de articulações entre abordagens são também indicadas.Palavras-chave: psicoterapia de casal; revisão histórica; metodologia; abordagens teóricas. Where do we come from? A Conceptual and Historical Review of Couple PsychotherapyABSTRACT -The purpose of the present paper is to review the main methodological and conceptual trends and changes of couple psychotherapy, indicating the approaches origin and changes in the understanding of the object, methodology, and psychotherapeutic models. The methodological focus was based on published couple psychotherapy review papers, presented in the PsycLit, and accessed trough CAPES home page in August, 2006. Diverse couple psychotherapy methodological and theoretical approaches are described and connected to several historical periods. Recent questions and contributions related to feminist, transcultural and post-modern perspectives are pointed out. Articulations among approaches are also indicated.Keywords: couple psychotherapy; historical review; methodology; theoretical approaches. O objetivo principal desta revisão é refletir sobre a construção do campo epistêmico da psicoterapia de casal. O campo da psicoterapia de casal desafia a possibilidade de uma revisão simples, pois muitas correntes, tendências e diferentes abordagens e perspectivas afloraram e conviveram em períodos históricos e em diferentes gerações de psicoterapeutas, simultaneamente. A evolução das abordagens, metodologias e teorias tampouco foi linear, o que impede uma descrição simples da história do campo. Tal fato se reflete, por exemplo, na escolha do uso dos termos "terapia de casal" e "psicoterapia de casal" pelos autores revisados. Embora o termo "psicoterapia de casal" pareça mais adequado, pela ênfase psicológica do tratamento, foi respeitada a escolha do uso de um ou outro termo pelos autores citados ao longo do texto. Portanto, realizar uma revisão teórica, ainda que sumária, parece útil, pois torna possível não só discernir os impasses teórico-metodológicos, mas também apontar direções possíveis de desenvolvimentos, indicando as principais e mais robustas descobertas do campo. Psychotherapy comprises all forms of psychological treatment. Four aims can be distinguished in various psychotherapeutic procedures – to provide a rewarding experience, to increase self-knowledge, to allow confession, or to effect a lasting change in behaviour. During psychotherapy, the therapist uses his behaviour to change that of his patient. Prediction of therapeutic events requires more knowledge of the periodic table of therapeutic elements than we now possess. Low-order empirical hypotheses are currently possible but unitary theories are too far removed from the data to be of predictive value. ‘Empirical’ implies reliance on observation and experiment, and empirical psychotherapeutic methods start with observation of patients’ behaviour outside and inside therapy. From such observation, ideas are formed about operative variables, and these ideas are tested in larger controlled situations. These in turn, suggest further ideas for pilot study. The dialectic between pilot and larger scale study revolves around clinical observation of patient behaviour in response to events outside and inside treatment. Therapist behaviour flexibly follows inferences about variables maintaining patient behaviour in the short- and the long-term. What the therapist actually does may have little relevance to the theory he espouses. Similar psychotherapeutic procedures can be described in many theoretical languages, and a rose by any other name smells just as sweet. When an existentialist logotherapist shows an obsessive-compulsive patient how to approach contaminated material and requests him to follow suit, he is doing the same as self-styled behaviourists who model with flooding in vivo and response prevention. More important than the global theory is the procedure actually employed. Of course, active therapeutic ingredients of most treatment techniques still have to be dissected. Effective psychotherapeutic methods are valuable tools of experimental psychopathology which advance understanding and efficacy simultaneously. Potent treatment changes certain behaviour and so enables the therapist to detect which pathologies are interlocking and which are independent. This is rather like an ablation experiment in neurophysiology. No one aspect of behaviour can be regarded as primary, and confidence can only be placed in psychotherapeutic results which are consistent across different facets of behaviour. ‘Behaviour’ here denotes any or all aspects of a sequence from its initiation in internal imagery and feelings, to its final execution as overt behaviour, together with its physiological concomitants. An empirical psychotherapeutic approach implies multifactorial mechanisms for aetiology and treatment. It allows active ingredients of treatment to be isolated, and delineation of relationships amongst different psychopathologies. In time, higher-order theories will become possible with greater predictive power than at present.
