Marine parks for coastal cities: A concept for enhanced community well-being, prosperity and sustainable city living

Abstract: Coastal cities continue to experience rapid urbanisation and population growth worldwide, linked to the diverse economic and social benefits flowing from proximity to the sea. Growing concern over human impacts upon coastal waters and global strategic goals for healthier cities requires that coastal cities develop innovative ways to inspire and empower communities to embrace and cherish city seascapes. Coastal city communities have much to gain from a healthier relationship with the sea. This paper proposes a … Show more

“…In the era of big data and artificial intelligence (AI), a large number of data from various sources are constantly generated from different perspectives of human lives [1][2][3]. Various AI powered service technologies are proposed utilizing the existing big data to facilitate the current sustainable smart city design, e.g., the development of smart grid [4], smart building [5], smart communication systems [6], and many more [7][8][9]. Such kinds of AI powered service technologies include Internet of ings (IoT) [10], cloud computing [11], edge computing [12], the fifth-generation (5G) mobile communication network [13], sensing networks [14], social networks [15,16], big data recommendation systems [17], etc.…”

“…Similarly, ‘blue space’ initiatives have led to applied community-centred approaches to improving awareness and connection to marine environments amongst urban populations (Gascon et al 2017 ; Garrett et al 2019 ). Experiential approaches, including the development of ‘city marine parks’, specifically aim to engage urban citizens with the marine environment in order to improve their understanding of the ocean, foster feelings of connectedness and stewardship, and promote cultures of urban marine citizenship (Principle 8) (Pittman et al 2019 ), thereby engaging groups of society who otherwise would have no exposure to ocean literacy learning.…”

“…In the highly productive coastal environment, habitat composition and connectivity across land-sea gradients control principal processes that in turn are subject to global environmental change (Grober-Dunsmore et al 2009;Olesen et al 2018). Today, human dependence on coastal resources is constantly growing as population density increases (Crossland et al 2005;Pittman et al 2019), inducing significant pressure from anthropogenic activities within the land-sea interface (Sloan et al 2007). To accurately address the strength and spatial patterning of ecological processes in the complex coastal environment, it is hence particularly important to understand the joint effect of landscape configuration, land-use change and ecosystem degradation.…”
