Marine Oil Slick Detection Based on Multi-Polarimetric Features Matching Method Using Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar Data

Abstract: Polarimetric synthetic aperture radar is an important tool in the effective detection of marine oil spills. In this study, two cases of Radarsat-2 Fine mode quad-polarimetric synthetic aperture radar datasets are exploited to detect a well-known oil seep area that collected over the Gulf of Mexico using the same research area, sensor, and time. A novel oil spill detection scheme based on a multi-polarimetric features model matching method using spectral pan-similarity measure (SPM) is proposed. A multi-polarim… Show more

“…These datasets include information regarding the relative thickness of the oil slick, oil slick and look-alikes, as well as data for different types of oil slick. RADARSAT-2 provides operation imaging, thereby allowing access to data with a reduced chance of conflicts, including, e.g., Fine, Wide, Standard, Spotlight, and ScanSAR, and supports linear single-, dual-, and quad-polarization options [4,11,12]. The capabilities of RADARSAT-2 quad-polarization data, incorporating extremely low noise-floor and cross-talk corrections for different channels, makes it a remarkable system for oil spill detection research [11,12].…”

“…Different technological and industrial developments over the past decades have brought about an increment in petroleum exploitation as well as the materialization of new petroleum-derived products (PDPs) [ 1 ]. The number of extraction, transport, or treatment processes where petroleum is involved has, therefore, increased noticeably, and as a consequence, oil and fuel spills have become more frequent [ 2 , 3 , 4 ]. Spills may be a consequence of the accidental collision of crude oil tankers or undesired leaks from underwater pipelines, among other reasons.…”
