“…At locations where the number of prey items consumed by the species was lower, the ecosystems presented more homogeneous conditions; for example, L. guttatus individuals in Costa Rica are surrounded by mangroves, whereas in Nayarit, Mexico, the area has sandy bottoms and rocky substrates (Tripp-Valdez and Arreguín-Sánchez 2009). However, off Guerrero, Mexico (Rojas-Herrera and Chiappa-Carrara 2002) where the number of prey items consumed by the species was greatest, the species richness could be due to the heterogeneity of the ecosystem, which includes rocky substrates, reef patches, soft bottoms, and a wide continental platform with variable oceanography dynamics (Palacios-Salgado et al 2014), which allows the species to feed on a greater number of prey items. The study area in the presently reported investigation (Santa Rosalía, BCS) was characterized by sandy and rocky bottoms, where oceanographic processes such as the dominance of regional winds that favor upwelling led to large numbers of prey species such as S. -3 (Gómez-Gutiérrez et al 2010).…”

“…Llegan a medir hasta 2 metros 5 . En la bahía de Acapulco se han reportado cuatro variedades de estos peces: Ablennes hians (pez agujón sable), Platybelone argalus (pez agujón de quilla), Strongylura exilis (pez agujón de California) y Tylosurus fodiator (pez aguja mexicano) 6 .…”

“…Marine ichthyofauna in estuarine-lagoons of the GT is composed of many species widely distributed between the provinces Cortés and Panamic, dominating species of tropical derivation over those of temperate origin. Although the GT is located at a critical point of the Central American gap, this has a limited effect on the fish fauna at the regional level in the Mexican tropical Pacific (Palacios-Salgado et al, 2014;Robertson & Cramer, 2009). From the standpoint of the continental biogeography, the Pacific slope provinces in northern and nuclear Central America are characterized by a low representation of primary derivation species (Cichlidae and Poeciliidae are the most speciose families), dominating components of marine and neotropical origin (Lozano-Vilano & Contreras-Balderas, 1987;Matamoros et al, 2015;Myers, 1966).…”
