Marine fishes in the Black Sea: recent conservation status

Abstract: A revised checklist of the fish fauna of the Black Sea is reported. This paper is the first attempt to present an actual Check List of the fishes in the Black Sea according to the data available in Black Sea countries, as well as their current conservation status, enlisted in IUCN. The total number of Black Sea fish species is 189. Concerning the conservation status, only two species (1.06 %) are extinct (Acipenser nudiventris and A. sturio), 3.70 % are critically endangered, 16.40 % are vulnerable, 1.06% are … Show more

“…According to the latest documents prepared by Yankova et al . (2011), it is in the Red Data Book of the Bulgarian Black Sea, while it was notified as ‘vulnerable’—a high risk of endangerment in the wild—in Turkey. There is insufficient data to make an assessment of its risk of extinction in Romania, there is a low risk in Georgia and Ukraine and no data are available from Russia.…”

“…In study, it was determined that 22 species those corresponding 63% of identified species in Düzce coast trawling composition was in least concern (LC) level. This rate is different from all Black Sea (26.46%) (Yankova et al, 2014), and similar to Düzce coast marine fish fauna (Yaglioglu, 2016). In this study, of the species within Düzce coast trawling composition, 14% is determined as "Vulnerable" 6% as "Critically Endangered", 6% as "Data Deficient" and 11% as "Not Evaluated" after the review of their red list statuses.…”

“…The length-weight relationship is widely used in the analysis of fishery data (28,29), mostly because of the difficulty and time required to record weight in the field (30). The relationship is often used to convert growth-in-length equations for prediction of weight-at-age and used in stock assessment models (31), to calculate condition indices (32) and for lifetime and morphological comparison of populations from various regions (33 A sum of 3455 authorized fishermen and 536 fishing boats are present in the Sinop region with ports like Gerze and Ayancık (37).…”
