Marine CSEM of the Scarborough gas field, Part 1: Experimental design and data uncertainty

Abstract: We describe the planning, processing, and uncertainty analysis for a marine CSEM survey of the Scarborough gas field off the northwest coast of Australia, consisting of 20 transmitter tow lines and 144 deployments positioned along a dense 2D profile and a complex 3D grid. The purpose of this survey was to collect a high-quality data set over a known hydrocarbon prospect and use it to further the development of CSEM as a hydrocarbon mapping tool. Recent improvements in navigation and processing techniques yield… Show more

“…True values are shown with black lines, and the background and segmented reservoir τ values are clearly visible as falling within the probable parts of the marginal PDF. Previous studies have shown that τ seems to be a more robust indicator of reservoir presence than resistivity alone (Constable & Weiss 2006;Myer et al 2012;Connell & Key 2013). The posterior probabilities on this quantity bolster this idea.…”

“…Since the Mesozoic era, the plateau has undergone a complex sequence of fracture, extension, uplift, truncation and subsidence. The result is that the plateau is covered by a number of mostly horizontal sedimentary layers of resistivities varying between 1 and 10 ohm-m (Myer et al 2012).…”

“…Stability was verified by adding different sequences of random noise to the data and evaluating the proximities among the corresponding solutions. The zero mean noise sequences have different intensities for data in different frequencies (Myer et al, 2012). In our examples, the data from lower frequencies are contaminated with higher noise levels, around 10 −15 V/Am 2 , whereas data from the higher frequencies are contaminated with a 10 −16 V/Am 2 noise level.…”
