Marine conservation challenges in an era of economic crisis and geopolitical instability: The case of the Mediterranean Sea

Abstract: In the Mediterranean Sea, socioeconomic drivers may accelerate the process of Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) declarations. Despite the challenges, the EEZ declarations may provide important opportunities for leveraging change to national policy towards the development of large-scale conservation of marine ecosystems and biodiversity in this zone. Using the Mediterranean Sea as a case study, we aim to highlight a set of best practices that will maximize the potential for the development of large-scale marine con… Show more

“…It is a policy and decision tool for the sustainable utilization of the maritime resources through analyzing and allocating the spatiotemporal patterns of human activities, [293], supporting the application of a holistic, coordinated, and trans-boundary approach; see also [294][295][296][297][298]. MSP is the foundation on which any further attempt for sustainable development of MRE in the MS should be lying.…”

“…As a result, a large part of the Mediterranean biodiversity is underrepresented in existing environmental management schemes, and remains effectively unprotected (MedPAN and UNEP/MAP-SPA/RAC, 2016; PISCO and UNS, 2016). This is especially true for the southern and eastern parts of the basin (including the Alboran, Eastern Ionian, Levantine, and Aegean seas), where a considerable lack of spatial information regarding ecological features, alongside several geopolitical and socio-economic factors, have dramatically delayed the implementation of rigid conservation actions (Giakoumi et al, 2012b;Katsanevakis et al, 2015).…”

“…Given "an era of economic crisis and geopolitical instability" some years ago, marine conservation in the Mediterranean Sea is still considered a particular challenge ( [26], p. 31). Marine and coastal habitats and in total some 10,000 isles and islands require protection and effective frameworks for sustainable development, balancing both ecological restoration and conservation, and (eco-) tourism.…”
