Marine Cellulases and their Biotechnological Significance from Industrial Perspectives

Abstract: Marine microorganisms represent virtually unlimited sources of novel biological compounds, and can survive extreme conditions. Cellulases, a group of enzymes which are able to degrade cellulosic materials, are in high demand in various industrial and biotechnological applications, such as in the medical and pharmaceutical industry, food, fuel, agriculture and their applications in single cell protein and as probiotics in aquaculture. The cellulosic biopolymer is a renewable resource and is a linearly arranged … Show more

“…Perhaps, cellulases broaden the niches of Labyrinthulomycetes and provide them with a powerful tool for competition. Furthermore, marine cellulase extracts have wide industrial and biotechnological applications, such as in the pharmaceutical industries, food, fuel, agriculture, and single-cell protein and as probiotics in aquaculture ( 55 , 56 ). Our findings suggest that Labyrinthulomycetes can be an alternative microbial source of cellulases for industrial and biotechnological applications.…”
