Marine algae from the Suva lagoon and reef, Fiji

All enquiries and manuscripts should be directed to:An international journal devoted to t h e t a xo n o my, b i o g e o g r a p hy and evolution of all plant groups a u s t r a l i a n s y s t e m a t i c b o t a n y Australian Systematic Botany 14, 689-869 Abstract A total of 222 taxa (excluding Cyanophyceae and non-geniculate corallinales) are reported from the Suva Lagoon and Reef (Fiji), consisting of 71 Chlorophyceae, 24 Phaeophyceae and 127 Rhodophyceae. Of these, five represent new or undescribed species. The Suva flora is comparatively impoverished with only 222 species, although the relative percentage of the three classes is comparable to the overall Fijian flora, in particular with respect to the Rhodophyceae. “…Previous reports of this alga in the western Pacific include those from French Polynesia (Payri & N'Yeurt 1997), Samoa (Skelton & South 1999), Australia (Cribb 1995;Kraft 2000), and New Zealand (Lambert et al 1996). Despite recent detailed phycological surveys in Fiji (South & Kasahara 1992;South et al 1993, N'Yeurt et al 1996N'Yeurt 2001), O. quekettii was not found, thus we report the first record of this alga from Fiji, where it occurs invading a species of barnacle, Acasta (Pendunculata: Acastinae). The barnacle in turn is endozoic in the gorgonian Rumphella suffruticosa (Dana, 1846).…”

An Updated and Annotated List of Marine Brown Algae (Phaeophyceae) of the Caribbean Coast of the Republic of Panama

“…The value of the submarginal vein as a distinguishing feature of D. delicatula has been questioned (Tsuda 1972, Allender and Kraft 1983, Phillips 2000, N'Yeurt 2001, and studies of Indian Ocean specimens (De Clerck, unpublished) of D. delicatula and D. repens reinforce the lack of distinction between these species. Pending further research including a detailed comparison of reproductive structures, both taxa are maintained as distinct species.…”
