The paper addresses several options to improve the reaction kinetics of alkali activated low calcium fly ash binders for soil stabilisation in road platforms. For that purpose, an experimental program was established to assess the strength evolution, with time, of different binders, based on ash, lime, sodium chloride and alkali solutions, applied in the stabilisation of a silty sand. The tests included unconfined compression strength tests, triaxial tests and seismic wave measurements performed at different curing periods. The results were compared with a binder made of Portland cement and a commercial additive specifically designed for soil stabilization in road applications. The activated ash mixtures with lime were the most performing producing a significant increase in the reactions development and, consequently, in the strength gain rate. The sodium chloride significantly improved the lime and lime-ash mixtures, but provided only a slight improvement in the activated ash mixtures.

Soils are made stronger and more durable by mixing additive materials. In particular, the use of waste provides environmental and economic advantages for this case. Wastes form in large quantities, however, which creates storage problems. To objective of this study is to research the availability of industrial wastes for soil stabilization. An experimental study was conducted on granular soil specimens mixed with industrial wastes such as marble and granite dust, boron waste, and fly ash in different ratios. Each mixture used two waste materials together. Specifically, fly ash was used with three additional waste materials because of its pozzolanic characteristics. The tests performed included freezing-thawing, unconfined compression strength, and California bearing ratio. The results of the study show that the strength of a specimen is dependent on the additive ratio, curing period, and the number of freeze-thaw cycles. Generally, unconfined compressive strength and California bearing ratio increased with additive materials and curing times. After freezing and thawing, unconfined compressive strength (except granite dust) decreased, whereas weight loss increased due to increasing additives and increasing freeze-thaw cycles.

In this study, the effects of waste marble powder and magnesium phosphate cement on the properties of soil were investigated. The incorporation of waste marble powder (MP) and (MPC) magnesium phosphate cement as a novel additive, lead the significant environmental and economic contributions in soil stabilization. The key properties of natural soil were extracted and several tests, such as specific gravity, Atterberg limits, sieve analysis, unconfined compression strength test, Direct shear box test, modified Proctor test, California bearing ratio, and Scanning electron microscopy test were performed on soil samples prepared with different percentages of MPC and MP, i.e. 0%, 2.5%, 5%, 7.5% and 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, respectively. An unconfined strength test was used to obtain desired comprehensive strengths following 7, 14, 28 days of curing time. The overall experimental results revealed that MP and MPC can be added to enhance the stability of the soil. While usability and effectiveness of MPC and MP are cost-effective and eco-friendly as the substitution of natural soil for deep foundations.
