A linear stability analysis is performed for the onset of natural convection in a horizontal nanofluid layer heated from below. The motion of nanoparticles is characterized by both the thermophoresis and Brownian diffusion effects. Different from previous studies in the literature, both the dependences of thermophoresis on nanoparticle volume fraction and Brownian motion on temperature are taken into consideration in the theoretical model. The result reveals that the base flow is mainly dominated by the effect of thermophoresis and the Brownian diffusion coefficient can be treated as a constant reasonably when a finite temperature difference is imposed across the nanofluid layer. Accordingly, a novel base solution of nanoparticle volume fraction is derived. It is found that the profile of nanoparticle concentration depends heavily on the magnitude of thermophoretic diffusion, which may exhibit a nonlinear distribution across the nanofluid layer once the effect of thermophoresis is significant. The suspended nanoparticles produce a strong destabilizing effect and a tiny volume fraction of nanoparticles is sufficient to trigger the onset of convection and make the nanofluid layer become unconditionally unstable. The dispersion spectra of unstable modes are demonstrated and the most unstable mode with the maximum growth rate is explored. The growth rate of the most unstable mode is found to increase significantly with increasing nanoparticle concentration, while the influence of heat capacity ratio of nanoparticle to base fluid on the behavior of thermal convection is negligible.

The present work is highly interested in examining the transport phenomena of the thin Cross hybrid nanofluid film flow over a continuously stretching surface. The proposed thin film flow study elucidates the film extrusion process, which is prominent in the packaging industry. With the intention of improvising the quality of the coating process, the thermocapillarity and injection effects have been probed in the present model. A suitable similarity transformation and the MATLAB software aid in producing accurate numerical solutions. The accumulated numerical results indicate that an increment in the hybrid nanofluid viscosity and surface tension intensity reduces the wall shear stress past the permeable stretching sheet and improves the heat transfer rate. Remarkably, negative film thickness has been identified when the unsteadiness parameter is greater than or equal to 0.9 while the thermocapillarity parameter falls within the range of 0 and 0.6.

The stability of bio-thermal Marangoni convection in a horizontal layer of fluid containing motile oxytactic microorganisms is investigated. The analysis of the instability caused by the upswimming of oxytactic microorganisms and by the temperature variation in the fluid layer is discussed using a linear stability analysis. The resulting equations of the problem are solved numerically using the Chebyshev spectral method. Results obtained showed that mode of instability can be either stationary or overstability depending on the range of the parameters’ values. Moreover, results showed that there is a correlation between the bioconvection Marangoni number and the thermal Marangoni number.
