This study aimed to evaluate the potential of clays from the State of Paraíba to be used for medicinal, therapeutic and aesthetic treatments. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence chemical composition, thermogravimetry, differential thermal analysis, laser diffraction granulometric analysis, cation exchange capacity, and antimicrobial activity. Based on the study, it was concluded that the clays from the State of Paraíba had properties similar to those of commercial clay. The antimicrobial evaluation revealed that the samples showed no activity against the three bacterial strains of clinical interest: Staphylococcus epidermidis ATCC 12 228, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25 923, and Escherichia coli ATCC 25 922. Finally, it was concluded that the clays studied have the potential for technological applications in medicinal, therapeutic, and aesthetic treatments, and as raw material for obtaining biomaterials, due to their stability and biological safety.Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a potencialidade das argilas do estado da Paraíba, visando suas aplicações em tratamentos medicinais, terapêuticos e estéticos. As amostras das argilas foram caracterizadas pelas técnicas de difração de raios X, composição química por fluorescência de raios X, termogravimetria, análise térmica diferencial, análise granulométrica por difração a laser, capacidade de troca catiônica e atividade antimicrobiana. Com base no estudo, concluiu-se que as argilas do estado da Paraíba apresentaram propriedades similares à argila comercial. A avaliação antimicrobiana revelou que as amostras não apresentaram atividade frente a três cepas bacterianas de interesse clínico: Staphylococcus epidermidis ATCC 12 228, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25 923 e Escherichia coli ATCC 25 922. Por fim conclui-se que as argilas estudadas possuem potencial tecnológico para aplicações em tratamentos medicinais, terapêuticos, estéticos e como matéria-prima para obtenção de biomateriais, em virtude da sua estabilidade e segurança biológica. Mining processes produce a massive amount of waste which, if not treated properly, can cause significant environmental and social impacts. Recently, some studies have focused on the use of mining waste as an alternative raw material. This work developed new sustainable ceramic formulations based on bentonite mining waste (BMW) for applications in porcelain stoneware. The BMW was incorporated into the ceramic masses in different percentages (0, 2.5, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 40 wt.%), in partial replacement to feldspar and total to quartz. X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential thermal calorimetry (DTA), and thermogravimetry analysis (TGA) techniques were used to characterize bentonite waste. Samples (50 mm × 20 mm × 5 mm) were obtained by uniaxial pressing. Such samples were dried and sintered at 1150, 1200, and 1250 °C. The physical–mechanical properties (apparent porosity, water absorption, linear shrinkage, apparent density, and flexural strength) were evaluated for sintered samples. The phases formed after sintering treatments were characterized by XDR and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The BMW presented a mineralogical composition suitable for use as ceramic raw material. In summary, our results presented that the new sustainable ceramic formulations sintered at 1250 °C have the potential for use in stoneware and porcelain stoneware.

Clays are used in various cosmetic formulations, such as sunscreens, toothpastes, deodorants, creams, hair cosmetics, makeups, nail polish, facial masks, and shampoos, among others, to improve the organoleptic and physicochemical characteristics, to increase the stability, or to facilitate elaboration. Together with their technological functionalities, clays are cosmetologically active ingredients with cleaning, anti-aging, anti-wrinkling, and sun-care functionalities. Talc, kaolinite, mica, and some smectites are the clay minerals used most frequently in cosmetic products, but several other phyllosilicates as well as modified and synthetic clays are also used. Sometimes, clays are useful in the design of cosmetics just because they are made of rigid, small, and anisometric particles. Kaolinite and mica are made of hard prismatic particles which are lightly abrasive over the skin, teeth, or hair. Electric charges in smectites result in ion-exchange capacities useful in the loading of active cosmetics but also adsorbing and cleaning waste substances. Intermediate net negative charges of smectites result in layer expansion in polar media and specific rheological properties that are very useful in cosmetic formulations. The absence of charged particles in talc and kaolin make them flow easily resulting in lubricant effects. Protection against radiation from the sun by clay particles and decorative effects complete the possibilities of clays in cosmetics. The nomenclature for clays used as ingredients in cosmetics follows historical use and the names of commercial products, rather than following strict compositional principles. In this sense, an effort was made here to correlate the names of the minerals that make up each of the clay-based cosmetic ingredients.
