Abstract. Monitoring agricultural areas threatened by soil erosion often requires decimetre topographic information over areas of several square kilometres. Airborne lidar and remotely piloted aircraft system (RPAS) imagery have the ability to provide repeated decimetre-resolution and -accuracy digital elevation models (DEMs) covering these extents, which is unrealistic with ground surveys. However, various factors hamper the dissemination of these technologies in a wide range of situations, including local regulations for RPAS and the cost for airborne laser systems and medium-format RPAS imagery. The goal of this study is to investigate the ability of low-tech kite aerial photography to obtain DEMs with decimetre resolution and accuracy that permit 3-D descriptions of active gullying in cultivated areas of several square kilometres. To this end, we developed and assessed a two-step workflow. First, we used both heuristic experimental approaches in field and numerical simulations to determine the conditions that make a photogrammetric flight possible and effective over several square kilometres with a kite and a consumer-grade camera. Second, we mapped and characterised the entire gully system of a test catchment in 3-D. We showed numerically and experimentally that using a thin and light line for the kite is key for a complete 3-D coverage over several square kilometres. We thus obtained a decimetre-resolution DEM covering 3.18 km2 with a mean error and standard deviation of the error of +7 and 22 cm respectively, hence achieving decimetre accuracy. With this data set, we showed that high-resolution topographic data permit both the detection and characterisation of an entire gully system with a high level of detail and an overall accuracy of 74 % compared to an independent field survey. Kite aerial photography with simple but appropriate equipment is hence an alternative tool that has been proven to be valuable for surveying gullies with sub-metric details in a square-kilometre-scale catchment. This case study suggests that access to high-resolution topographic data on these scales can be given to the community, which may help facilitate a better understanding of gullying processes within a broader spectrum of conditions.

Monitoring coastal ecosystem resilience for climatic and/or anthropogenic vulnerabilities is challenging with moderately resolution Landsat images. A simple, low-cost Kite Aerial Photograph platform (KAP) was vital to obtain high-resolution images for a small area to develop coastal GIS models. This study examines post-tsunami relief in two coastal shrub ecosystem and a mangrove ecosystem in terms of vegetation bioshield mass and sea level rise perspectives. A KAP platform was created using two light-weight automatic cameras with dual bandpass Red-NIR filters, a Picavet stabilizing rig, a GPS tracker and a Parafoil Kite. The KAP images were processed to build mosaic images, orthorectified and geo-referenced Digital Elevation Model (DEM) using structure-from-motion (SFM) and remote sensing software (Agisoft PhotoScan and ENVI respectively). KAP has been utilised for coastal mapping under three scenarios: (i) object-orient feature extraction for discriminate Prosopis juliflora, an invasive alien species, and texture analysis for coastal shrub and herbaceous vegetation classification (ii) DEM for sea level rise, and (iii) Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) for mangrove bioshield mass estimation. The image processing produced a point cloud with an average density of 35 points/m 2 ; a DEM with 17 cm resolution; and an orthophoto mosaic with an average resolution of 4.0 cm. The results showed that object orient feature extraction can discriminate Prosopis juliflora from the coastal shrubs with 62% accuracy, while supervised classification accuracy was 51%. Mangrove vegetation in Rekawa was discriminated from grassland and other coastal shrub vegetation types at ≥4 NDVI threshold resulted in 0.33 ha of mangroves (28% of 1.15 ha of the total area). The Kahandamodara beach coastal vegetation was dominant by Ipomoea pes-capre with 26% coverage. In conclusion, KAP has a wide potential to bridge science with high spatial/temporal resolution in-situ data for coastal habitat mapping, where the researchers can utilize the data within a low-cost budget.

Current advancements on photogrammetric software along with affordability and wide spreading of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), allow for rapid, timely and accurate 3D modelling and mapping of small to medium sized areas. Although the importance and applications of large format aerial overlaps cameras and photographs in Digital Surface Model (DSM) production and LIDAR data is well documented in literature, this is not the case for UAV photography. Additionally, the main disadvantage of photogrammetry is the inability to map the dead ground (terrain), when we deal with areas that include vegetation. This paper assesses the use of near-infrared imagery captured by small UAV platforms to automatically remove vegetation from Digital Surface Models (DSMs) and obtain a Digital Terrain Model (DTM). Two areas were tested, based on the availability of ground reference points, both under trees and among vegetation, as well as on terrain. In addition, RGB and near-infrared UAV photography was captured and processed using Structure from Motion (SfM) and Multi View Stereo (MVS) algorithms to generate DSMs and corresponding colour and NIR orthoimages with 0.2&thinsp;m and 0.25&thinsp;m as pixel size respectively for the two test sites. Moreover, orthophotos were used to eliminate the vegetation from the DSMs using NDVI index, thresholding and masking. Following that, different interpolation algorithms, according to the test sites, were applied to fill in the gaps and created DTMs. Finally, a statistic analysis was made using reference terrain points captured on field, both on dead ground and under vegetation to evaluate the accuracy of the whole process and assess the overall accuracy of the derived DTMs in contrast with the DSMs.
