Mapping with strings attached: Kite aerial photography of Durai Island, Anambas Islands, Indonesia

Abstract: A 1:2,000 scale orthophoto map of the southern coast of Durai Island, Indonesia, was created using kite aerial photography and computer vision software. Photographs were taken using a consumer-grade digital camera suspended from the line of a kite that was towed by boat along Durai's coastline. Three hundred and fifty-seven aerial photographs were combined into a mosaic, orthorectified and georeferenced using Agisoft PhotoScan software with ground control points collected via a GPS field survey. The map was cr… Show more

“…These results represent an improvement over those presented in El Maaoui et al 2015, where the same acquisition method was also used successfully over an area of only one-tenth of that covered in this study. In other works that obtained DEMs with kites, the maximum areas covered were also of the order of several hectares (Wundram and Loeffler, 2008;Marzolff and Poesen, 2009;Smith et al, 2009;Bryson et al, 2013Currier, 2015). Our results clearly constitute an extension of the kite's capability.…”

“…Similarly, KAP has taken for mapping of intertidal landscapes at sub-centimeter resolution (Bryson et al, 2013), intertidal vegetation monitoring at 4 cm resolution (Pauly and Clerck, 2011) and ecological surveys of coral reef at 15 cm resolution (Currier, 2015). KAP has been utilized for several coastal applications to address the knowledge gaps.…”

“…KAP has been used for different coastal applications such as coral reefs mapping (Currier, 2015), sediment depositional characteristics (Bryson et al, 2016), coastal erosion (Madurapperuma et al, 2017a) and sea level rise (Madurapperuma et al, 2017a).…”

“…As UAVs are "are to be understood as uninhabited and reusable aerial vehicles" (van Blyenburgh, 1999), kites (Currier, 2015), balloons (Snow et al, 1989) and radio-controlled aircrafts (Theodoridou et al, 2000), have been used for a long time in mapping using photogrammetric practice. Therefore, the use of such platforms in photogrammetric mapping applications has been around for a long time.…”
