The challenges cities and regions face now and in the future are enormous and uncertain, to be determined or affected by unexpected extreme events like pandemics, economic crises, and climate change. So, it is urgently needed to get beyond the dichotomies in urbanism, and, by default, urbanism should have the nature to combine these perspectives. To move forward, people involved in urbanism should be aware of each other’s knowledge, qualifications, and worldviews, taking any opportunity to transcend and connect different discourses to invent better ways of achieving resilience and sustainability. With the ambition to create such opportunities, the 14th conference of the International Forum on Urbanism (IFoU) in 2021 called for papers to contribute to dialogues in five tracks that represent five types of debates over a set of dichotomies. 1. “Urban-rural Integration” and “Areas In-Between” 2. The City is an Object and a City is in Transition 3. Political Ecology and Adaptive and Transformative Framework 4. Metropolization and the Right to the City 5. Human-centred and Nature-based Approaches in Cities

Townscape research in the context of urban morphology research is a new direction. To understand the scope and need of research, first, you need to answer the question of what townscape is and how it can be understood in the context of research of various directions, what is the object being studied. It is important to understand why there was a need for research in such a direction and what influence it had on urban planning and design. The article aims to name the concept of townscape in the eyes of different researchers, to describe the possible ways of understanding and researching the townscape, to reveal the origin and need of townscape research in area of today’s urban design. The main goal of the article is to refine the definition of the concept of townscape.

Nolli map is the earliest diagram tool to simplify and quantify urban form, which most intuitively reflects the spatial layout of tangible elements in the city. The urban morphology contains its inherent evolutionary laws. Exploring the inner rules of cities is helpful for people to conduct urban research and design. Unlike the traditional research methods of urban morphology, the neural network algorithm provides us with new ideas for understanding urban morphology. In this experiment, we label 136 European cities samples in the rules of Nolli map as a training set for machine learning. We use Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) for multiple mapping experiments. The generated images present recognizable and plausible images of the urban fabric. The results show that the machine can learn the inherent laws of complex urban fabrics, which expands a new applied method for the study of urban morphology.
