Sliuzas, co-promoter In 2009 CIESIN, the center at The Earth Institute of Columbia University where I work, was contacted by Koko Warner of the United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) and Charles Ehrhardt of CARE to develop maps for a report entitled In Search of Shelter. I had the privilege of leading the team of GIS specialists and designers who produced the maps in this report. The repo… Show more

“…For example, by laying the climate change maps next to maps of malnutrition rates it was possible easily to identify areas where both climate change and health programming could be prioritised and coordinated. This use of maps confirms findings from other work in which maps are found to be useful boundary objects for generating discussions among people with different disciplinary backgrounds or portfolios (de Sherbinin ; Preston et al . ).…”

“…241 Population growth and increased population density are expected to exacerbate these effects, leading to, among other impacts, increased migration. 242 Migration from the Northern Triangle (El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras) has sharply increased, especially since 2017. 243 Environmental degradation, extreme weather events, population density, poverty and violence are the main factors driving this migration 244 -particularly with regard to rural families, CASCADING RISKS An initial event creates risk(s) that spill over into other regions or sectors, generating further impacts that snowball to produce new risks distinct from and potentially greater than the original event.…”

“…Thus, though the dynamism of vulnerability was long recognized, future socioeconomic conditions were seldom accounted for. In this study, flood risk was assessed using an integrated approach, which focuses on both the physical and social aspects of the flood event as they are equally important (Adger, 2006; De Sherbinin, 2014; Gain et al, 2015; Qi et al, 2022; Rahman, 2006). The physical aspects include the flood attributes such as affected area, depth and duration, and the social aspects include the features of human life and property that face the harmful consequences due to the occurrence of the flood (de Moel et al, 2015; Huda et al, 2022).…”
