Mapping the Potential Global Range of the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug, Halyomorpha halys, with Particular Reference to New Zealand

Abstract: Abstract:Originating from Asia, the brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB) is a significant pest of horticultural/agricultural crops, grapes, woody ornamental and herbaceous plants, and is also a nuisance to people, due to its overwintering behavior in human habitation. The global range of this pest is steadily increasing and previous predictions of environmental suitability have shown New Zealand to be highly suitable. Due to the economic value of horticultural and agricultural industries to the New Zealand econom… Show more

“…YSSB could also become an ecological and economic danger to other parts of the world outside its' area of origin if proper conditions and circumstances arise [45]. As far as New Zealand is concerned [13,46], and based on the mapping study with BMSB [47], there is no doubt that YSSB could establish in the country if it arrives and would potentially have significant economic impacts on a range of important horticultural crops, such as stone fruit, apples, and kiwifruit.…”

“…One of the main emerging pests is the brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB), Halyomorpha halys (Stål) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae). A temperature-dependent model was implemented to forecast oviposition [31], whereas other models are about its potential distribution [32,33]. Within coleopterans, the potential spread of Xylotrechus arvicola (Oliver) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) in Spain following climate change scenarios was studied by means of a degree-days-based model [66].…”
