Mapping the knowledge domains of Building Information Modeling (BIM): A bibliometric approach

Abstract: Since 2002, building information modelling (BIM) has flourished expeditiously and has been adopted broadly in the field of built environment. In step with this explosive implementation and adoption, scores of articles have been published on BIM. Given this flood of documents over the last decade, the objective of this study to use a bibliometrics approach to help discover and benchmark the most valuable and highly cited publications in this burgeoning area. Not only do these techniques facilitate the identific… Show more

“…Co-word analysis is an important subset of bibliometrics, providing an immediate picture of the content of research topics in a scientific field (Ding et al, 2001;Yang, Wu, & Cui, 2012). Traditional methods (i.e., structured literature reviews and meta-analysis) are still valuable for interpreting, understanding, and discussing complex subject areas (Li, Wu, Shen, Wang, & Teng, 2017). “…The classical approach to reviewing the literature in particular research domains has mainly focused on two methods: qualitative methods, based on a structured review of the literature, and quantitative methods, mainly employing meta-analysis (Nájera-Sánchez, Mora-Valentín, Ortiz-de-Urbina-Criado, & Moura-Díez, 2019). Bibliometric methods (e.g., co-word analysis) complement traditional methods by increasing the objectivity and transparency of literature reviews (Zupic & Čater, 2015), revealing quantitative and accurate connections between various studies (Li et al, 2017), enabling the clear visualization and interpretation of the conceptual structure of a scientific field (Li et al, 2017), and identifying underlying research patterns (Qasim, 2017). “…The research is conducted in consecutive stages of tools selection, data collection, data processing and analysis, visualization and presentation, interpretation and discussion of findings [43]. The process of knowledge mapping here includes two stages referring to former research [44]. The first involved constructing networks through document co-citation analysis, keywords co-occurrence analysis, cluster identification analysis, and citation burst analysis, followed by the second stage of generating maps for representing and interpreting useful information.…”

“…In the last step, all publications are analysed critically and being compare to identify current process, obstacles and future work to close these gaps. This strategy is also adopted by many previous studies, such as Zou et al [10] and Li et al [11]. The preconstruction phase of a project also known as planning and design phase [12].…”
