Mapping the Intellectual Structure of Digital Divide

Abstract: To explore the intellectual structure of digital divide research in the last decade, this study identified the most important publications and the most influential scholars as well as the correlations among these scholar's publications. In this study, bibliometric and social network analysis techniques are used to investigate the intellectual pillars of the digital divide literature. By analyzing 26,966 citations of 852 articles published in SSCI journal in digital divide area between 2000 and 2009, this study… Show more

“…Due to ICT's importance in the improvement of the economy and social care, the problem of how to measure the digital divide has gained importance in terms of research [30,31,42,47,48]. Wang et al [49] identified 852 journal articles and books published between 2000 and 2009, with more than 26,000 citations using the term ''digital divide'' as keyword, in order to map the intellectual structure on this subject. However, despite the increasing attention that this phenomenon has received, measuring the access and diffusion of ICT is a complex task plagued by several constraints.…”

“…Figures 1 and 2 show the research themes of the authors in HRH studies. Different node shapes appeared after performing a "faction study" of these authors (Wang, McLee, & Kuo, 2011). This method groups elements in a network based on the sharing of common connections to one another.…”

“…When the authors are grouped together, there are common elements among them. According to this analysis, the closeness of these authors revealed their algorithmic similarities as perceived by the citers (Wang et al, 2011). The co-citation correlation matrix was factor analyzed with varimax rotation, a common procedure that attempts to fit (or load) the maximum number of authors with the minimum number of factors (McCain, 1990).…”

“…For example, Cheng-Hua Wang, Yender McLee, and Jen-Hwa Kuo [4] explored the intellectual structure of supply chain management in its early stage of development, using principle component analysis on an author co-citation frequency matrix; Etemad [5] identified the most influential authors and studies in electronic commerce field by using citation analysis; Ponzi [6] explored the intellectual structure and interdisciplinary breadth of supply chain management in its early stage of development, using principle component analysis on an author co-citation frequency matrix; Chan, Seow and Tam [7] used citations from accounting dissertations completed during 1999-2003 to provide a ranking of accounting journals; Acedo and Casillas [8] explored the research paradigms of international management research by applying factorial analysis techniques in an author co-citation study; Ramos-Rodriguez and Ruiz-Navarro [9] examined the intellectual structure change of strategic management research by conducting a bibliometric study of the Strategic Management Journal. To the best of our knowledge, no similar study has been conducted on the current research of supply chain management.…”
