“…Despite notable diversity in location and sexual orientation, our sample was largely European American and Protestant. In a nationally representative study (White et al, 2021), 63.8% of those affiliated with a professional chaplaincy organization were European American (compared to our 86%) and 47% were Protestant (compared to our 58.2%). Notably, participants in the larger intervention program who declined to complete research measures were somewhat more diverse in terms of race/ethnicity and religious tradition, suggesting a potential selection bias regarding who "opts in" to research studies.…”

The present sample had more White respondents and more Catholic respondents then the larger body of chaplaincy (White et al 2020).…”

“…Although Witz's (1990Witz's ( , 1992 framework coincides with the present study's findings, it traditionally approaches professionalization as if professions are wholly male or female. The framework may be limited for professional healthcare chaplaincy that reports an equal number of female and male chaplains (White et al 2020), The consideration of gender within professionalization theories and frameworks must also consider the political environment in which such changes occur as well as variations in communication strategies about one's profession.…”

“…Wherever they find their own spiritual grounding, SCPs have a wealth of knowledge of the resources religious practice provides and the skills to build a relationship and make community connections. Current chaplains are predominantly Christian, and it is expected that as religious diversity grows, so too will diversity among SCPs (Cadge et al, 2019;White et al, 2020).…”
