Mapping the global endemicity and clinical burden of Plasmodium vivax, 2000–17: a spatial and temporal modelling study

Abstract: Background Plasmodium vivax exacts a significant toll on health worldwide, yet few efforts to date have quantified the extent and temporal trends of its global distribution. Given the challenges associated with the proper diagnosis and treatment of P vivax, national malaria programmes-particularly those pursuing malaria elimination strategiesrequire up to date assessments of P vivax endemicity and disease impact. This study presents the first global maps of P vivax clinical burden from 2000 to 2017. Methods In… Show more

“…Exposure to broad-spectrum antibiotics alters the body's microbiota, increases opportunistic infections, and promotes antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which may restrict future treatment options for the child. 1 Therefore, a contextual evaluation of risks and benefits is necessary when prescribing antibiotics.…”

“…P. falciparum and P. vivax present contrasting cases in terms of distribution, disease severity 53 , drug sensitivity/resistance 54 and relapse 55 . Perhaps, the most intriguing aspect that differentiates these two species is the strict restriction of P. vivax to immature reticulocytes 11 .…”

“…One benefit of using S j is that it separates the timing and amplitude aspects of seasonality. Since high-resolution malaria burden estimates already exist [26][27][28], the model did not need to estimate the number of cases and could focus exclusively on estimating the monthly proportions at each location. Estimates of the monthly parasite incidence (MPI) for each location could also be obtained by multiplying the estimated monthly proportions with the mean Pf API estimates for 2016.…”
