Mapping the concept of vulnerability related to health care disparities: a scoping review

Abstract: BackgroundThe aim of this paper is to share the results of a scoping review that examined the relationship between health care disparities and the multiplicity of vulnerability factors that are often clustered together.MethodsThe conceptual framework used was an innovative dynamic model that we developed to analyze the co-existence of multiple vulnerability factors (multi-vulnerability) related to the phenomenon of the ‘Inverse Care Law’. A total of 759 candidate references were identified through a literature… Show more

“…International standards recommend that a detainee's right to medical care be equivalent to that available to the general community [6,10]. Social vulnerabilities can have both short-and long-term health consequences [11]. Mental health, somatic and addictive disorders have already been studied among arrestees [8,[12][13][14][15].…”

“…For example in cross-sectional studies, prevalence odds ratios are often not viewed as causal measures unless they are a proxy for an incidence rate ratio [810]. Grabovschi et al [11] seemingly echo this view, stating “The reviewed research studies also have some important methodological limitations related mostly to their reliance on survey data, which could preclude causal interpretation and only measure statistical associations and tendencies.”…”

“…Several studies have pointed to the relevance of deepening the health analysis, considering the vulnerability of people and groups, their components, a variety of factors and magnitude, as well as the repercussion of health disparities and inequalities [2][3][4][5].In that sense, it is relevant to widen the recognition of the elements that permeate children's vulnerability to health damages to identify interventions that result in improvements in the quality of child care [6].…”
