Mapping quantitative trait loci for osteochondrosis in fetlock and hock joints and palmar/plantar osseus fragments in fetlock joints of South German Coldblood horses

Abstract: The aim of this study was to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) for osteochondrosis (OC) and palmar/plantar osseous fragments (POF) in fetlock joints in a whole-genome scan of 219 South German Coldblood horses. Symptoms of OC and POF were checked by radiography in 117 South German Coldblood horses at a mean age of 17 months. The radiographic examination comprised the fetlock and hock joints of all limbs. The genome scan included 157 polymorphic microsatellite markers. All microsatellite markers were equall… Show more

“…Various whole-genome scans using microsatellite markers revealed QTL in Hanoverian warmblood breeds and South German coldbloods (Dierks et al, 2007;Wittwer et al, 2007Wittwer et al, , 2008Wittwer et al, , 2009. Those studies only shared 1 QTL on Equus caballus (ECA) 16.…”

“…Early studies using primarily linkage based analyses (dependent on family data), to detect regions of the genome associated with OC in the horse have identified several putative quantitative trait loci (QTL) (Dierks et al 2007;Wittwer et al 2007b). As is typical for QTL 6 discovered using this approach, their effects are generally large but their locations are imprecise.…”

“…Several studies to date have considered further subdivision of OC cases by joint affected, resulting in different QTL being identified for each subgroup (Dierks et al 2007;Wittwer et al 2007b). This is appealing given the apparent low correlation 22 among the occurrence of lesions of OC in different body locations (Jorgensen and Andersen 2000;Jorgensen et al 1995;van Grevenhof et al 2009b) and the corresponding idea that OC is in fact a localised disease (Ytrehus et al 2007).…”

“…Quantitative trait loci relating to osteochondrosis in South German Coldblood horses have been identified and implicate genes for collagen type-III, type-V and type-XXVII, as well as interleukin 6 (among others) as heritable components (Wittwer, Lohring, Drogemuller, Hamann, Rosenberger and Distl 2007).…”
