Mapping Pharmacological Network of Multi-Targeting Litchi Ingredients in Cancer Therapeutics

Abstract: Considerable pharmacological studies have demonstrated that the extracts and ingredients from different parts (seeds, peels, pulps, and flowers) of Litchi exhibited anticancer effects by affecting the proliferation, apoptosis, autophagy, metastasis, chemotherapy and radiotherapy sensitivity, stemness, metabolism, angiogenesis, and immunity via multiple targeting. However, there is no systematical analysis on the interaction network of "multiple ingredients-multiple targets-multiple pathways" anticancer effects… Show more

“…However, the seed, leaf, and skin of litchi were usually abandoned. Research studies have showed that they are rich in polyphenols, flavonoids, and saponins, which are demonstrated to have great medicinal value. As in our previous report, there are a range of phenolic compounds, such as protocatechuic acid, protocatechuic aldehyde, procyanidin D, (−)-epicatechin, cinnamtannin B1, procyanidin A1, rutin, and phlorizin in litchi seeds . Pharmacological studies showed that litchi seeds had multiple bioactivities such as antiobesity, antioxidant, anti-inflammation, antihyperlipidemia, antidiabetes, hypoglycemic, and immunoregulation .…”

“…Litchi seeds have been traditionally used in Chinese herbal formulas for urologic neoplasms including prostate cancer, renal carcinoma and bladder cancer ( Hsu et al, 2012 ; Emanuele et al, 2018 ). In a previous study, we found that flavonoids were the most abundant chemical component among the extracts of Litchi seeds which exerted anti-PCa activity ( Guo et al, 2017 ; Cao et al, 2020 ). Other studies also found that flavonoids extracted from Litchi pericarp such as epicatechin and proanthocyanidin B2 had anticancer activities ( Koga et al, 2017 ).…”

“…Its seeds have been traditionally used in China for treating male urogenital diseases, including prostate cancer, prostatitis, benign prostatic hyperplasia and orchitis etc. ( Cao et al, 2020 ). Accumulating pharmacological evidence suggested that the extracts of Litchi seeds have anticancer effects and can inhibit metastatic tumor growth ( Hsu et al, 2012 ; Emanuele et al, 2018 ).…”

“…As a new paradigm in drug studies, derived from systems biology and bioinformatics, network pharmacology can reveal the underlying molecular mechanisms of Chinese herb medicine, via the construction and visualization of “medicine–target–disease” interaction network ( 21 , 22 ). Network pharmacology can reflect the “multiple components–multiple targets–multiple pathways” of anticancer effects of Chinese herb medicine ( 23 ), which is potential to solve the same problems of the D. officinale methanolic extract.…”
