Mapping out research focus for robotics and automation research in construction-related studies

Abstract: Purpose The adoption of robotics and automation (R&A) within the construction industry has been adjudged as slow, despite the possibility of it reducing the high risk posed on health and safety of humans by the activities of the industry. The call for research and development in this area of technology to improve its adoption in the delivery of construction projects is evident in past studies. Thus, this paper aims to conduct a review of R&A in construction-related fields with a view to revealing the a… Show more

“…This is because the scientometric analysis is objective: It relies on the analysis of large data and it is rigorous in nature. This approach has been adopted in different studies to achieve similar objectives, including in the field of sustainability of megaprojects [26], robotics and automation research [27]), ontology research in construction [28], IT application in construction and demolition waste management [29], and in some BIM-related studies. These include (but are not limited to) [30] (who applied it in the study of 276 articles related to BIM application in Construction Engineering and management sourced from Scopus), [31] (who applied this approach in the mapping of managerial areas of BIM through the analysis of 126 publications published between 2007 and 2015), and [23] (who applied it in the study of BIM research trends in Africa).…”

“…This enabled the observation of keyword occurrence trends over the years studied (2006)(2007)(2008)(2009)(2010)(2011)(2012)(2013)(2014)(2015)(2016)(2017)(2018)(2019). This approach was applied in recent review studies (for instance, [27,62]. This analysis, as presented in Figure 10, contains 134 keywords and six clusters.…”

“…In this study, the VOSviewer software was used to analyse statistical evidence obtained from the data source and develop a co-occurrence map. VOSviewer has gained widespread usage in the review of construction literature and has been adopted in previous construction health and safety research Liang et al 2018;Jin et al 2019;Akram et al 2019;Aghimien et al 2019;Vigneshkumar and Salve 2020).…”

“…With the emergence of novel technologies, various types of technologies such as Virtual Reality (VR), online databases, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Building Information Modelling (BIM), Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), 4 D Computer-Aided Design (4 D CAD), robotics and automation, laser scanning, photogrammetry and sensor-based technologies which have been around for some time have proven to provide a lasting solution to the problem of construction health and safety to prevent workers' injuries, accidents and improve construction job site health and safety Welch et al 2015; Dodge Data and Analytics 2017; Zhang et al 2017;Aghimien et al 2019;Bansal 2020).…”

“…VOSViewer is a free software tool developed to facilitate bibliometric analysis, being focused on visualizations of bibliometric mappings (Van Eck and Waltman 2010). Several studies in the literature employed this tool, either to highlight research topics in a particular area (e.g., Aghimien et al 2019) or to investigate citation networks (e.g., Leydesdorff et al 2013). In the context of the present work, the VOSViewer was employed to generate term correlation graphs, in which the relations between the terms are represented by connections (edges).…”
