Mapping of sample collection data: GIS tools for the natural product researcher

Abstract: Scientists engaged in the research of natural products often either conduct field collections themselves or collaborate with partners who do, such as botanists, mycologists, or SCUBA divers. The information gleaned from such collecting trips (e.g. longitude/latitude coordinates, geography, elevation, and a multitude of other field observations) have provided valuable data to the scientific community (e.g., biodiversity), even if it is tangential to the direct aims of the natural products research, which are of… Show more

“…Google Maps is a widely available, free of charge, and extremely powerful tool for visualisation with a simple, intuitive interface that requires little training or experience to use it. It can be run on any conventional desktop computer or laptop, and there is also a Google Maps application available for mobile phones [22]. Because a visual representation of scientific data is more informative than a written description, this article describes the development of an internet-based mapping and geo-referencing application for tracking the worldwide dissemination of NDM-1-producing bacteria as an example of this application.…”

“…Manual or computer aided processes are required to transform available data into suitable formats for GIS. If properly processed, transformed and analysed, significant enhancements in presentation, opportunities for analysis and useful information may result from such conversions (Flocks, 2004;Jung & Elwood, 2010;Oberlies et al, 2009). …”

“…Red soil samples were collected from two separate sites, and the geographic relationships of these and other soil samples collected by our team in Jordan in 2004 are described and mapped in a recent article (36). Sample A460-9-3 was collected from an agricultural field on the grounds of the National Center for Agricultural Research and Technology Transfer, north of Amman at 32°04Ј42ЉN and 35°50Ј32ЉE (elevation, 633 m).…”
