Mapping of European activities on the integration of sex and gender factors in neurology and neuroscience

Abstract: Background and purpose Neurological disorders pose a profound unmet medical need for which new solutions are urgently needed. The consideration of both biological (sex) and socio‐cultural (gender) differences between men and women is necessary to identify more efficacious, safer and tailored treatments. Approaches for putting sex and gender medicine into practice have gathered momentum across Europe, but it is currently unclear to what extent they have been implemented in the field of neurology and neuroscienc… Show more

“…Sex was identified as a determinant of cognitive change. The study of sex differences in the field of AD is increasingly recognized as a key priority in research and clinical development [ 132 ]. Our results support the idea that gender inequalities over the life course, together with biological sex differences, contribute to the success of lifestyle interventions.…”

“…We also examined sex differences, which are increasingly recognized as a key priority in research and clinical development in this field [20,21]. Although women represent twothirds of individuals with AD [22], they have long been under-represented in many RCTs and, when included, the typically small numbers reduced statistical power, resulting in imprecise effect estimates, possibly missing potential benefits.…”

“…To obtain a comprehensive picture, in collaboration with the Task Force on gender and diversity of the EAN, we have mapped current European research, financing, and teaching initiatives that incorporate sex and gender considerations in neuroscience and neurology ( Hentzen et al, 2022 ). We demonstrated that there is a rising demand and interest in neurological domains, both from funding organizations and researchers.…”

“…We demonstrated that there is a rising demand and interest in neurological domains, both from funding organizations and researchers. However, most activities, particularly in education, are linked to individual researcher motivation and are rarely organically embedded into the curriculum and strategic research goals ( Hentzen et al, 2022 ).…”
