Mapping of biodiversity hubs and key ecosystem services as a tool for shaping optimal areas for conservation

Abstract: Most National Parks (NP) and nature reserves in Rwanda have been established opportunistically in the early 1900s, without clear consideration of ensuring the protection to all threatened different taxonomical or functional groups, such as vegetation, invertebrates, fish, and birds. With the increasing conservation objectives, raised expectations into Protected Areas (PA), and within a more challenging environmental context, it is important to identify biodiversity hubs and key areas for Ecosystem Services (ES… Show more

“…The biodiversity conservation is focused is on the most vulnerable elements -endangered wildlife species and natural habitats. These approaches are used at the regional, national and international levels [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]. The lists of endangered and vulnerable species are approved by the Red Data Book of the Nizhny Novgorod Region [14-15]at the regional level, by the Red Data Book of Russian Federation [16][17] at the national level and by the documents of the Standing Committee to the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats Standing Committee Resolution (Bern Convention) [18] at the international level.…”

“…McRae & Beier, 2007;Spigler, Theodorou, & Chang, 2017). Regions with robust movement corridors may become the focus of restoration projects and expanded outwards, acting as hubs (Gatwaza & Wang, 2021;Lindenmayer, 2019). Regions with impeded species flow may be used strategically to limit the movement of undesirable species or targeted to aid in the movement of valued species (Allesina, Bodini, & Bondavalli, 2006;Lustig, James, Anderson, Plank, & Maron, 2019;Maron, McAlpine, Watson, Maxwell, & Barnard, 2015).…”
