Mapping of 195 genes in cattle and updated comparative map with man, mouse, rat and pig

Abstract: Our on-going goal is to improve and update the comparative genome organization between cattle and man but also among the most detailed mammalian species genomes i.e. cattle, mouse, rat and pig. In this work, we localized 195 genes in cattle and checked all human/bovine non-concordant localizations found in the literature. Next, we compiled all the genes mapped in cattle, goat, sheep and pig (2,166) for which the human ortholog with its chromosomal position is known, added corresponding data in mouse and rat, a… Show more

“…We report here the assignment of the bovine PAX6 gene to BTA15q25 → q27 by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and radiation hybrid (RH) mapping. This location is consistent with known conservation of synteny between cattle, human and mouse genomes (Hayes et al, 2003).…”

“…The ILSTS027 microsatellite marker was previously mapped on BTA15 by linkage mapping (Kappes et al, 1997). The assignment of the bovine PAX6 gene on BTA15q25 → q27 agrees with the comparative mapping data, which shows conserved synteny between BTA15, HSA11 and MMU2 (Hayes et al, 2003).…”

“…The DIK020 microsatellite marker was previously mapped on BTA10 by linkage mapping (Inoue et al, 1995;Taylor et al, 1997) and the LTBP2 STS marker maps to the telomeric end of the BTA10 RH map (Band et al, 2000). The assignment of the bovine ALDH6A1, ABCD4, and CHX10 genes on BTA10q34 agrees with the comparative mapping data, which shows conserved synteny between BTA10, HSA14 and MMU12 (Band et al, 2000;Hayes et al, 2003).…”

“…Detailed human/bovine comparative maps have been developed (Hayes 1995;Band et al 2000;Hayes et al 2003), increasing the possibility of exploiting the genome sequence and the growing functional characterization of reference species such as man (Lander et al 2001), rat (Gibbs et al 2004), or mouse (Waterston et al 2002). These data provide new insights to unravel the genetic determinism involved in the variation of some traits of breeding interest (Andersson and Georges 2004).…”
