Mapping innovation and diffusion of hydrogen fuel cell technologies: Evidence from the UK's hydrogen fuel cell technological innovation system, 1954–2012

Abstract: With the global sustainability transition in energy, hydrogen fuel cell (HFC) applications currently have important niche roles to play across several industrial sectors. Theorists examining this innovative activity have identified key socio-technical factors affecting the nature and pace of change. One functional approach to innovation, Technology-Specific Innovation Systems (TSISs), places national HFC Technological Innovation Systems (TISs) within a framework of a global HFC TSIS. This analytical approach s… Show more

“…In addition to fuel cells (both mobile and stationary) and hydrogen, the influencing factors were sourced from studies on alternative transportation technologies such as battery, hybrid and automated vehicles. We also integrate factors emphasised in innovation literature like socio-technical transitions and technological innovation systems [39][40][41], since their relevance is widely recognised by hydrogen scholars [42][43][44].…”

“…In addition, due to the imbalance of regional development, the contribution to the growth of transport investments is different from region to region in China (Magazzino and Mele, 2020). From the technology side, although HFCV is still in the initial technology development phase over a period of time (Hardman et al, 2013;Hacking et al, 2019), it is radical innovation with the potential to significantly disrupt conventional combustion engine technology (Zapata and Nieuwenhuis, 2010). Among the core technologies of HFCV, fuel cell is a typical representative.…”
