Mapping Dynamic Indicators of Quality of Life: a Case in Rosario, Argentina

Abstract: Mapping temporal changes of quality of life conditions reflecting the wellbeing of individuals, communities and urban areas has the potential to identify spatial patterns and trends towards prosperous and just societies. This paper presents an approach to map and to compare quality of life variations in time and space across districts and neighbourhood areas of the city of Rosario (Argentina). Census data (1991, 2001 and 2010) have been used to map and trace the trajectories of neighbourhood areas in relation… Show more

“…GIS, which provides an integrated environment for spatial analysis, was proved a powerful tool to data processing and QoL mapping [34][35][36][37]. The contribution of GIS was particularly valuable in the production of secondary geographical variables, through specialized spatial analysis functions (e.g., cost distance), especially in criteria with no available statistical variables.…”

“…GIS can contribute to the assessment of QoL as it allows the connection of statistical variables with spatial data, provides specialized spatial analysis functions and conduces to mapping and creating of data visualizations [29]. The role of GIS in QoL research is also noticed in many studies [16,[30][31][32][33][34][35][36][37][38].…”

“…Quality of life reflects the well-being of individuals and societies across different dimensions or domains (Sirgy et al 2006). There are two recognized approaches to research on quality of life: the evaluation of objective quality of life, which focuses on people's material life conditions (Smith 1973;Zolnik 2004;Higgins and Campanera 2011;Martinez 2018) and the evaluation of subjective quality of life, which explores individual's life experience and perception of happiness via surveys (Campbell et al 1976;Diener 2000;Moore et al 2006;Rezvani et al 2013). However, no consensus has, to date, been reached as to whether quality of life should be limited to objective or subjective measures.…”

“…In recent decades, a lot of research has been conducted to evaluate QoL, both individually and geographically, and many methodologies have been proposed for these analyses [14,15]. As the mapping of the QoL can highlight effectively its spatial distribution [16,17], QoL maps support decision making for targeted actions toward the improvement of QoL within the area under investigation.…”
