Mapping Crop Distribution Patterns and Changes in China from 2000 to 2015 by Fusing Remote-Sensing, Statistics, and Knowledge-Based Crop Phenology

Abstract: Maps of different kinds of crops offer information about both crop distribution and crop mix, which support analyses on food security, environmental change, and climate change. Despite the growing capability for mapping specific crops, the majority of studies have focused on a few dominant crops, whereas maps with a greater diversity of crops lack research. Combining cropping seasons derived from MODIS EVI data, regional crop calendar data, and agricultural statistical surveys, we developed an allocation model… Show more

“…Food security and related issues are always the PRC's highest priority and are among the most sensitive of topics. Recently, several techniques have been developed to map cropland patterns and dynamics from RS observations, including traditional satellite-based LULC mapping and UAV imagery applications [49][50][51][52][53]. These studies focus on the damage assessment of high-value crops in smaller areas.…”

“…In addition, agriculture remains one of the most researched EO data applications, with exponential growth occurring since 2013 [3]. Some of the most notable agricultural applications include crop areas and monitoring [4][5][6][7][8], yield estimates [9][10][11], irrigation mapping [12][13][14], and crop loss assessment [15][16].…”
