Mapping Controversies with Social Media: The Case for Symmetry

Abstract: This article assesses the usefulness for social media research of controversy analysis, an approach developed in Science and Technology Studies (STS) and related fields. We propose that this approach can help to address an important methodological problem in social media research, namely, the tension between social media as resource for social research and as an empirical object in its own right. Initially developed for analyzing interactions between science, technology, and society, controversy analysis has i… Show more

“…In previous research, social media is often seen as a place to get data about how people think about social issues (see Matthews, 2015). Yet, communication on social media is not merely or necessarily a reflection of offline practices, but rather a meaning-making experience in itself (Champ et al, 2013;Marres & Moats, 2015). There is a need for qualitative insight in the dynamics between bloggers, readers, commenters, and followers, and in particular, how this influences on-blog communication about sustainability.…”

“…How would these (largely) anti-nuclear Fukushima stories or (largely) pro-nuclear stories about Hinkley Point circulate as part of on-going controversies? In this particular series of events, it became clear that Twitter was a key channel in which claims about nuclear power were circulated (Moats, 2015).…”

“…In this case, the issue of health data sharing, the flawed opt-out form designed to deal with it and the 13 news story, respectively, make an emergent 'concerned public' visible and force existing institutions to respond. The concept of "issues" has been elaborated in STS most explicitly by Noortje Marres (2005a; (Callon, 1986;Latour, 1987;Marres and Moats, 2015). Matters of concern, like issues, have been used to describe objects like climate change that are complex, distributed, and composed of heterogeneous actors but do not necessarily turn on controversies over knowledge and science (Latour, 2004).…”
