Desde hace varias décadas, la cultura se ha utilizado como instrumento de regeneración urbana para revitalizar las zonas degradadas. Si bien existe gran cantidad de investigaciones que estudian el fenómeno, hace falta ampliar el debate hacia las etapas de diagnóstico y planeación. Este artículo busca responder a ese vacío mediante el estudio de la técnica del mapeo cultural y de su aplicación en un caso de estudio: el centro de Monterrey, México, para identificar zonas potenciales de aglomeración de cultura. Estas zonas, conocidas como clústeres culturales, pudieran estar generando procesos de regeneración urbana que contribuyen en la revitalización del lugar. Se utiliza un método mixto de análisis que conjunta datos cuantitativos con métodos cualitativos. Los resultados muestran la existencia de dos clústeres culturales en el centro, conformados por distintos actores, diferenciados por variados tejidos urbanos, que ayudan a potenciar la regeneración del centro de Monterrey.

This paper discusses a research-in-progress project engaging citizens in the collaborative 3D reconstruction of special urban features (SUFs) -visual works of art located in urban public spaces. While most artists modelling urban public spaces use basic 3D building models, these models do not include visual artworks. Because urban planners use artists' models when designing urban public spaces, we believe it is necessary to incorporate SUFs into 3D city models to help urban planners and artists visualize urban spaces more effectively. To achieve this goal, we propose a bottom-up approach to the geographic visualization of SUF cultural assets (i.e. cultural mapping) which so far has not been undertaken as a citizen science project. The main aims of this project are to engage citizens in contributing to 3D SUF models and to familiarize them with citizen science. The method includes crowdsourcing SUF data and analysing it using 'structure from motion' (SfM) algorithms. After a 6-month campaign in Lublin, Poland, this project has so far resulted in 271 observations and 144 collaborative 3D models, creating a 3D open-data product which can be used for further culturally sensitive urban planning purposes.

Urban development, or architectural design in fragile (sensitive) territories is always complicated, especially when one considers national, regional, reserve parks, or other territories that have a lot of sociocultural meaning to society, and local communities. Existing bureaucratic procedures complicate community involvement into planning process, and creativity manifestation in decision making is vague. The article analyses three design through research project cases developed by authors, which share common goal-to improve the quality of the environment using innovative and contemporary solutions, deal with landscape sustainability and local identity issues by involving community into design process. Presented samples reveal three different design through research and participatory design models. In each case site planning projects are initiated by different groups, therefore motives for the project implementation differ. That determines the sample of public inclusion, scope of fulfilled research, design solutions and capabilities for sustainability of the project. Comparative analysis of these cases summarize strengths and weaknesses of each model and form recommendations for similar territorial development in the future.
