Mapping Cod: Fisheries Science, Fish Harvesters’ Ecological Knowledge and Cod Migrations in the Northern Gulf of St. Lawrence

Abstract: Some recent scholarship has focused on integrating local and/or traditional knowledge with conventional scientific information in fisheries management to improve the factual foundation of and strengthen support for management decisions. This article compares a sequence of historical and contemporary scientific texts and maps about the migrations and stock structure of cod in the Northern Gulf of St. Lawrence with texts and maps generated by the authors through the collection, aggregation and interpretation of … Show more

“…For instance, some studies have demonstrated that fishers' local experiences may not characterize accurately such ecosystem process as predator-prey dynamics or seasonality Wagner 2003, Ruddle andDavis 2011). However, the great value of TEK is a complement to scientific information at the local scales (Murray et al 2008, Nenadovic et al 2012, especially in countries where precise scientific data is unavailable or nonexistent. In the HLS, TEK might be used as hypotheses to be scientifically tested in future research.…”

“…Although the Northern Gulf cod stocks are considered isolated, there is scientific evidence that they occasionally mix with other NAFO regions including the Strait of Belle Isle around 3K, the Burgeo Bank region in 3Ps, and the southwest part of the gulf region around 4TVn (Yvelin et al 2005;Murray et al 2008). Fish harvesters interviewed in the 3Pn region (especially Rose Blanche and Port aux Basques) were apprehensive about successful recovery due to the migration patterns of 4RS3Pn stocks and the on-going winter fishing activities in adjacent NAFO region 3Ps.…”

“…Consulting local people for this knowledge has become increasingly important for conservation planning (e.g., ParradoRosselli 2007, Murray et al 2008, Gaoue and Ticktin 2009, Stacey et al 2012, especially in many northern regions (e.g., Kendrick and Manseau 2008, Brook et al 2009, Henri et al 2010, Mustonen and Feodoroff 2013, Polfus et al 2016. This detailed, cumulative, and often dynamic knowledge of both past and present ecological systems has been termed "traditional ecological knowledge" (TEK) (Gadgil et al 1993, Inglis 1993, Huntington 2000, Menzies and Butler 2006.…”
