Mapping Climate Parameters over the Territory of Botswana Using GMT and Gridded Surface Data from TerraClimate

Abstract: This articles presents a new series of maps showing the climate and environmental variability of Botswana. Situated in southern Africa, Botswana has an arid to semi-arid climate, which significantly varies in its different regions: Kalahari Desert, Makgadikgadi Pan and Okavango Delta. While desert regions are prone to droughts and periods of extreme heat during the summer months, other regions experience heavy downpours, as well as episodic and unpredictable rains that affect agricultural activities. “…A script consists of a sequence of predefined commands with parameters that control the appearance of cartographic elements and features. The most well-known cartographic tools that employ scripts for data processing are GMT [106] and GRASS GIS [107]. Other software allows scripts as an additional functionality alongside the standard GUI, as seen in ArcGIS or QGIS.…”

“…An additional image for 2015 was selected for Kisangani due to the higher cloud coverage in 2013. The geographic map in Figure 1 has been plotted using the generic mapping tools (GMT) defined by scripts following the existing methodology [98][99][100]. The study area encompasses the middle Congo river basin with the three specific towns of Bumba, Basoko, and Ksangani, located in consecutive order southwards.…”

“…It has a resolution of 3 arc-seconds (90 m) and the following technical parameters: an entity ID of SRTM3N07W006V2 and tile coordinates: of 5-6°W, 7-8°N, with an acquisition date of 11 February 2000. The general map showing the study area was plotted based on the General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans (GEBCO) [115] using GMT scripting [116] and following the existing methodology [117,118].…”
