Mapping and modelling helminth infections in ruminants in Europe: experience from GLOWORM

Abstract: Abstract. Mapping and modelling helminth infections in cattle and sheep in Europe through advanced geospatial research was one of the main task of GLOWORM, a three year project (2012)(2013)(2014) funded under the European Commission's (EC) seventh framework programme (FP7). Liver flukes as Fasciola hepatica and gastrointestinal nematodes, such as Haemonchus contortus were chosen for the project since these parasites constitute a major cause of lost productivity in small and large ruminants. The output of the G… Show more

“…One of the aims of the EU-GLOWORM project was to update current knowledge of prevalence of the most important gastrointestinal nematodes, namely, Haemonchus , Teladorsagia and Trichostrongylus , through harmonised sampling and diagnostic procedures in key regions in Europe (Rinaldi et al., 2015c). Overall, it was shown that, in all three pilot countries, Italy, Ireland and Switzerland, prevalences of gastrointestinal nematodes were generally very high, ranging between 91 and 100% (Rinaldi et al., 2015b).…”

“…The stronger potential to match the suitability of various environments to parasite life cycles and transmission dynamics provides a new way to address the nidality concept introduced by Pavlovskii as far back as 1945 [16]. Based on his ideas, geography and environmental variables associated with health data have led to the concept of disease ecology, where RS provides useful insights on the different factors related to transmission levels and disease distributions, while mapping and modelling facilitates interpretation, synthesis, and recognition of outbreak frequencies [17].…”
