Map-based cloning and characterization ofBPH29, a B3 domain-containing recessive gene conferring brown planthopper resistance in rice

Abstract: HighlightA brown planthopper resistance recessive gene, BPH29, was cloned which contained a B3 DNA-binding domain and conferred resistance by a mechanism that was similar to plant defence against pathogens.

“…Since the first reports of the BPH resistance genes Bph1 and bph2 by Athwal et al 8, at least 30 new BPH resistance loci have been identified from cultivated and wild species of Oryza 79101112131415161718. To date, four of these resistance genes, Bph14 19, BPH26 11, Bph3 20 and BPH29 12, have been cloned. Bph14 and BPH26 both encode a coiled-coil, nucleotide-binding-site, leucine-rich repeat (CC-NBS-LRR) protein1921.…”

“…Genetic resistance against all the three species has been reported through large scale screening of rice germplasm under greenhouse conditions (Heinrichs et al 1985, Bentur et al 2011. Such a screening method has mainly identified genotypes that are less preferred and are less fed upon (Horgan, 2009 glaberrima (Cheng et al 2013, Fujita et al 2013, Wang et al 2015. These studies have shown that though resistance to planthoppers is wide spread and distributed widely among Oryza species, resistance is quantitative.…”

“…Furthermore, overuse of insecticides may affect populations of natural enemies of BPH and lead to resistance/tolerance to insecticides, and resurgence of the BPH problem7. Therefore, breeding for host resistance is considered the most economical and environmentally friendly strategy for BPH control8.…”
