Manufacturing system design based on axiomatic design: Case of assembly line

Abstract: Abstract:Purpose: In this paper, a combined Production Line Design (PLD) process which includes many design aspects is presented, developed and validated.Design/methodology/approach: The PLD process is based on the SADT (Structured Analysis and Design Technique) diagram and the Axiomatic Design (AD) method. Findings:The results of the validation indicated that the production line designed by this process is outperformed the initial line of the company.Practical implications: For a purpose of validation, this p… Show more

“…The variant design of production lines is usually studied around a specific topic, such as production line balance [17][18][19] , equipment configuration optimization [20][21][22] , and layout design 23,24 . However, the design of the production line must be characterized, reasoned, and decided through the global design idea 25 . In practice, the variant design of the production line is complex and high-dimensional, not only including configuration design at the static level but also logic design at the dynamic level.…”

“…Matt (2013) proposed a design approach based on AD principles to control the sensitivity of assembly systems to fluctuations. Hager et al (2017) proposed a methodology for manufacturing system design, in particular assembly lines. Celek et al (2019) proposed an assembly system design methodology by implementing AD principles for aircraft fuselage structures assembly.…”
