Manufacturing, characterization and thermal conductivity of epoxy and benzoxazine multi-walled carbon nanotube buckypaper composites

Abstract: The preparation procedure of epoxy and benzoxazine multi-walled carbon nanotube buckypaper composites is described. The morphology of the buckypaper is characterized by scanning electron microscopy and porosimetry, revealing a non-uniform porous structure. The wetting behavior of epoxy and benzoxazine resins in the buckypaper surface is studied by contact angle measurements. Scanning electron microscopy photographs of the composites obtained by infiltration of the buckypaper with epoxy and benzoxazine resins a… Show more

“…Thermal conductivity of BP/polymer composites has presented similar results to conventional CNT-based composites. Charpategui et al [92] prepared BP/epoxy composites where the CNTs concentration was in the range of 35-60 wt.%. The result revealed a thermal conductivity of 0.43 W/mK, which is very close to that reported in traditional CNT/epoxy composites [88] .…”

“…The result revealed a thermal conductivity of 0.43 W/mK, which is very close to that reported in traditional CNT/epoxy composites [88] . This behavior can be attributed to the small thermal conductance of the nanotube-polymer interface, the high interfacial thermal resistance between CNTs and, by a reduction of the number of contact points between CNTs [88][89][90][91][92] , which limit considerably the heat transfer.…”

“…The reinforcement strategy of benzoxazine resins generally relies on the use of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) [10][11][12], clay minerals [13][14][15][16][17][18] or carbon nanotubes [19][20][21][22][23], which have been extensively used as polymer fillers. Regarding clay minerals, a traditional organomodification approach is employed to promote clay dispersion in benzoxazine.…”

“…In other words, the CNT can be deliberated as elongated fullerene. 1,2 The recognition of MWCNT and single-wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) brought about a new invasion of research in lightweight high-performance reinforced polymers. Due to exceptional characteristics such as mechanical, thermal, electrical, and optoelectronic properties which depend on the atomic arrangement, the CNT have been known as the materials of this era.…”
