Manufacturing and sustainability of bonding systems for grinding tools

Abstract: (150 -200 words)Grinding and honing processes are quality-defining operations in the production of many modern products. Process performance and product quality are contingent on selecting the correct abrasive tool for a specific application. Thus, tools with different bonding systems are used, namely resin bonded tools, vitrified bonded tools, and metallic bonded tools. Tool manufacturers have great knowledge in the choice and intricate production of these bond types and their countless variants. Most bond sy… Show more

“…Resin-bonded grinding wheels were compounded via hot pressing with the resin-abrasivereinforcement mixture filled in a mold. The mold was patterned with the negative of the desired grinding wheel shape and size [11]. This operation occurred under compression at predetermined temperature and pressure of 300 o C and 40 MPa respectively.…”

“…Once it is technical-scientific knowledge that the impurities in this kind of oxides are responsible for affecting the properties of such oxides, the addition of components intentionally inserted can modify the properties and cause effects that shall be points for investigation [2]. It is worth highlighting that the presence of Cr 2 O 3 and TiO 2 , for example, increases toughness, while the presence of Na 2 O is disadvantageous since it results in the formation of β-11Al 2 O 3 .Na 2 O compound responsible for reducing the hardness of the white fused alumina [6]. As in the conventional sintering process, the addition of niobium in the calcined aluminum oxide reduces the alumina sintering temperature due to the activation of the presence of the liquid phase [7], and densification happens as the temperature and the concentration of niobium increase.…”

“…Resin bonded abrasive tools are generally manufactured in thermal-pressing molds. Most of the manufacturing process needs high pressure and high temperatures (of about 200 °C) for a long time [2]. The required pro le of the grinding wheels can be achieved by providing appropriate molds.…”
