Manufacturing and mechanical characterization of square bar made of aluminium scraps through friction stir back extrusion process

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this paper is to manufacture an aluminium square cross-sectional bar by using conventional lathe machine from aluminium scraps through friction stir back extrusion (FSBE) process and study the viability of the process to produce the square bar. Design/methodology/approach The important tasks involved in this work are as follows: designing and manufacturing the chamber and plunger components used for experimental work, experimentally studying the thermo-mechanical progression of FSBE pr… Show more

“…When driving uphill, the external force exerted on one wheel will directly affect the wheel speed. When the walking wheel reaches the slope, the wheel speed will change with the resistance; if the two front wheels of the chassis do not go uphill at the same time, the motor pressure of the front wheel that goes uphill will increase suddenly (Gelaw et al , 2018). As the two front wheels are driven in series with two motors, the pressure of the hydraulic motors will rise sharply, and the hydraulic pressure of the right front wheel will increase to a peak value and increase the torque.…”

“…Studies have shown that this method can produce sound and hole-free rods and tubes in which the microstructure of the raw material is modified through a dynamic recrystallisation mechanism. The significance of this method as a solid-state process lies in characteristics such as creating a fine equiaxed microstructure, controlling the chemical composition during the process, using simple equipment, and performing the process in one step [13]. The main parameters in this process are rotational speed, extrusion speed, axial force, and punch diameter.…”

“…For this reason, mechanical structures are designed and tested frequently in literature under various environment (Jayaram and Gonzalez, 2011). Testing of mechanical structures was studied and reported extensively in the literature for various configurations and designs (Gelaw et al , 2018).…”
