Mantle cell lymphoma involving the thyroid: a case report

Abstract: This first report of mantle cell lymphoma involving the thyroid diagnosed by FNA emphasises the importance of knowing the history of previous lymphoma and the role of rapid on‐site evaluation in triage. Specific subtyping was possible using a combination of cytomorphological analysis, flow cytometry and the detection of a t(11;14) translocation.

“…The case by Hojilla and co‐authors was the first report on the cytological diagnosis of MCL involving the thyroid in a patient with a known MCL and the second case of thyroid MCL with an FNA description but which was diagnosed on histology . Our additional case highlights that a cytological diagnosis of MCL is feasible when a cell‐block is obtained from the FNA.…”

“…We have read with interest the report by Hojilla and co‐authors on the first case of mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) of the thyroid diagnosed on cytological smears. We have recently encountered a similar case of blastoid mantle cell lymphoma of the thyroid diagnosed on a cytology cell‐block preparation.…”

“…It is unclear whether the above-mentioned prognostic indices and treatment regimens apply to MCL that presents as a PTL. One case report highlighted the discovery of MCL in the thyroid after a primary presentation in the gastrointestinal tract [ 9 ]. This patient had a low Ki-67 index [10–15%] and had good survival with continued surveillance.…”

“…The major sites of extranodal manifestations are blood, bone marrow, gastrointestinal tract, and lungs 2 . Notably, thyroid gland involvement is uncommonly reported, with only four case reports in the literature 3‐6 . Herein, we present two MCL patients with thyroid gland involvement on presentation.…”
