Mansonellosis, the most neglected human filariasis

Abstract: Human mansonellosis is caused by M. perstans, M. ozzardi and M. streptocerca, the three main filarial species in the genus Mansonella. Despite accumulating evidence of a high prevalence in endemic areas, there is currently no filariasis control programme targeting mansonellosis. The health-related impact on people living with these filariae remains unknown, and evidences regarding treatment strategies are scarce. Like other neglected diseases, it mainly affects poor populations living in tropical and subtropic… Show more

“…In endemic areas, the probability of infection increases with age, with the prevalence reaching 100% in highly endemic areas. However, the infection is the least studied and is likely one of the most neglected of all tropical diseases, subject to more neglect than schistosomiasis, taeniasis, echinococcosis, or rabies [9,10].…”

“…Like other neglected diseases, it mainly affects poor populations living in tropical and subtropical climates and it has not been associated with a clear and distinct clinical picture [1]. It can be considered one of the most neglected tropical infectious diseases [10].…”

“…In mammalian hosts, adult Mansonella worms are located in connective tissues or peritoneal, pleural, or pericardial cavities. 4 Microfilaria of M. perstans will circulate in the blood and are approximately 190 to 200 lm in length  4 lm (slightly smaller than the diameter of a red blood cell). The microfilariae are unsheathed; the tail tapers to a bluntly rounded end and nuclei extend to the end of the tail.…”

“…M. perstans is considered the most frequent filariasis in Africa. 4 It is found mostly in the wet and subtropical and tropical areas of Africa from Senegal to Zimbabwe. Despite accumulating evidence of a high prevalence in endemic areas, currently there is no filariasis control program targeting mansonellosis.…”
