Manipulation of the oestrous cycle of the bitch—what works… for now

Abstract: Contents Manipulation of the oestrous cycle of the bitch is a common request of pet owners for different reasons. On one side, clients may be interested in temporally preventing oestrus until the bitch has finished the performance career, or to manage the kennel in the presence of a stud dog and to avoid undesirable breeding. Additionally, clients with no interest to use their animal for breeding, may, for ethical reasons, prefer to avoid elective surgery such as ovariectomy, to control reproduction. On the ot… Show more

“…A synthetic analog of gonadotropinreleasing hormone (GnRH) -deslorelin, which is the active substance of the implant, provides a pulsating release of a hormone that has an effect similar to the action of natural GnRH (Kutzler, 2005;. Deslorelin is GnRH agonist that stimulates estrus in adult dogs (Maenhoudt et al, 2018).…”

“…Upon reviewing the existing literature and considering the preference expressed by the owner to keep the litter, the decision to remove the implant was predominantly influenced by the case report conducted by Goericke-Pesch et al, 7 which highlighted a lack of maternal behaviour and milk production after a pregnancy in a queen with a deslorelin implant. Contrary to the bitch, where the deslorelin implant has been used off-label to induce oestrus with a considerable (60%) level of fertility, 15 we still know little about this application in the queen. Considering this case and the current literature, it appears possible to not only induce fertile ovulation and heat in oestrus and post-oestrus queens, 3 but also to carry to term a normal pregnancy without side effects for the queen and the litter, thanks to removal of the implant during pregnancy.…”

“…There are indeed different pharmacological protocols to induce oestrus, such as dopamine agonists (anti‐prolactinergic drugs like cabergoline and bromocriptine) and GnRH agonists (such as deslorelin). However, induction of heat is not easy to obtain and the longer the interval from the previous oestrus is, the better the expected results of the induction are (Maenhoudt et al., 2018 ). However, a healthy and regular bitch will return to heat based on her normal cyclicity and there is no need for induction.…”
