Manipulation of the induction of adjuvant arthritis in Sprague-Dawley rats

Abstract: Since outbred SD rats are much cheaper and more readily available than Lewis rats, this well-developed SD rat AIA model is an efficient and cost-effective arthritis model available for screening novel anti-arthritic agents.

“…The latter is known to stimulate synovial fibroblasts and cartilage chondrocytes to secrete MMPs which play a major role in the degradation of collagen (Arend andDayer 1995, Poole et al 2003). The rise in the level of TNF-a during disease progression of AIA in rats was also reported by Cai et al (2006). Figure 5.…”

“…Radiographical observation confirms the severe soft tissue swelling, bone erosion and joint deformation with 4 mg/kg body weight of collagen. These histopathological and radiological observations closely resemble the severe arthritis changes in human rheumatoid arthritis [31,32].…”

“…The type of arthritis, which develops in Sprague Dawley (SD) rats, depends on variables like type of adjuvant and its dose (Cai et al, 2006). An injection of heat-killed bacterium (M. butyricum) at the dose 500 μg, resulted in the development of adjuvant-induced arthritis (AIA), which was typical of polyarthritis.…”
