Manipulating the topological structure of ultrarelativistic electron beams using Laguerre–Gaussian laser pulse

Abstract: A method of using intense Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) laser pulse is proposed to generate ultrarelativistic (multi-GeV) electron beams with controllable helical structures based on a hybrid electron acceleration regime in underdense plasmas, where both the longitudinal charge-separation electric field and transverse laser electric field play the role of accelerating the electrons. By directly interacting with the LG laser pulse, the topological structure of the accelerated electron beam is manipulated and it is spa… Show more

“…With the aid of the results of [54,55], we investigate the coherence of such a radiation created by particle beams and the conditions when transition and Vavilov-Cherenkov (VCh) radiations can be used as a pure bright source of twisted photons. In particular, we show that the helically microbunched beams [56][57][58][59][60][61][62][63][64][65] with a certain helix pitch and transverse size produce coherent twisted transition and VCh radiations with large projection of the total angular momentum. Notice that coherent transition and VCh radiations of plane-wave photons were discussed in many papers and books (see, e.g., [45,[66][67][68][69][70][71]).…”

“…7). The same situation happens in a plasma perturbed by the helical wave of phonons or photons [63][64][65]108]. However, in order to describe the radiation of twisted photons quantitatively, one needs to take a spatial dispersion into account in this case.…”

“…These bunches provide a generalization of axially symmetric bunches for which the radiation of twisted photons was considered in [10]. Nowadays, there are several techniques to create such bunches [2,3,6,18,19,25,26,[76][77][78]. The helical bunches were used in [3] for generation of twisted photons by undulators at the first harmonic.…”

“…In recent years with the development of ultra-intense multi-PW laser technology, Laguerre-Gaussian laser modes have other potential applications in the fields of plasma accelerators, inertial confinement fusion and in the generation of X-rays and γ-rays with OAM [7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14]. In particular, it has been shown that in laser wakefields driven by LG 01 helical pulses, the wakefield shows a donut-like structure with a ring-shaped hollow electron beam [14].…”
