Rasashastra [Iatrochemistry] is a branch of Ayurveda which contain herbo-mineral preparations which helps in treatment of diseases. Minerals and metallic compounds like Mica, Copper and Iron pyrites, Mercury, Gold, Zinc, Brass, gems like Ruby, Diamond, calcium compounds like Lime soda are used after proper purification. Several studies done on these formulations shows anti-cancer activity. Thus some are directly indicated in arbuda chikitsa [cancer treatment]. Arbuda chikitsa [cancer treatment] has described by acharyas in classics. In that few herbomineral preparations are mentioned like Vajra bhasma, Raudra rasa, Nithyananda rasa etc. Some compounds are used by physicians for cancer according to their logic and practical experience like Shiva gutika, Tuttha bhasma etc. some metallic compounds like gold, diamond etc. are used in chemotherapy also. Trisenox injection made of Arsenic oxide [Gouri pashana] is used in leukaemia treatment. This is a compilation of medicines which are described in classics, proved in researches and used in clinical practices. BACKGROUNDRasa medicine is a renowned holistic system of traditional medicine emphasizing curative and preventive measures. Rasashastra [Iatrochemistry] has developed a rich and unique treasure of drug knowledge in which use of metals and minerals is very much advocated. Cancer is one of the most life threatening diseases and possess many health hazard in both developed and developing countries, characterized by irregular proliferation of cells. Cancer kills about 3500 million people annually all over the world; it accounts more than 2-3% of the annual deaths recorded worldwide. It refers to any one of a large number of diseases characterized by the development of abnormal cells that divide uncontrollably and have the ability to infiltrate and destroy normal body tissues. Common sites of cancer are thyroid, oral, prostate, uterus, breast, ovary, GIT, lungs and kidney. In Ayurveda cancer is correlated with term "Arbuda". CANCER Cancer is a deadly disease which is difficult to cure if it reaches advanced stages. So we should be aware about the stages of cancer. It has 4 stages:

According to a 2020 WHO study, cancer is responsible for one in every six fatalities. One in four patients die due to side effects and intolerance to chemotherapy, making it a leading cause of patient death. Compared to traditional tumor therapy, emerging treatment methods, including immunotherapy, gene therapy, photothermal therapy, and photodynamic therapy, have proven to be more effective. The aim of this review is to highlight the role of gold nanoparticles in advanced cancer treatment. A systematic and extensive literature review was conducted using the Web of Science, PubMed, EMBASE, Google Scholar, NCBI, and various websites. Highly relevant literature from 129 references was chosen for inclusion in this review. Recently, the synergistic benefits of nano therapy and cancer immunotherapy have been shown, which could allow earlier diagnosis, more focused cancer treatment, and improved disease control. Compared to other nanoparticles, the physical and optical characteristics of gold nanoparticles appear to have significantly greater effects on the target. It has a crucial role in acting as a drug carrier, biomarker, anti-angiogenesis agent, diagnostic agent, radiosensitizer, cancer immunotherapy, photodynamic therapy, and photothermal therapy. Gold nanoparticle-based cancer treatments can greatly reduce current drug and chemotherapy dosages.

“Ayurveda”, an ancient Indian science of living which originated about 5000 thousand years ago, establishes ways of living a healthy life by establishing harmony between body, mind, and spirit. Ayurveda suggests lifestyle and dietary changes for the management of cancer and cancer like symptoms. Though the occurrence of this disease about five thousand years ago was sparce, yet the ayurvedic texts do mention some symptoms that can be aliased to cancer. These are often treated by different Ayurvedic procedures and formulations. Majority of these formulations balance the elements in our body referred to as “Tridoshas” which are vatta, pitta and kapha. It has been reported that the herbs, lifestyle and dietary changes that act by balancing “Tridoshas” show beneficial effects on cancer at various stages of the disease. Medicinal plants that possess a set of defined attributes such as bitter, pungent, astringent biopotency, act as excellent candidates for prevention, mitigation and treatment of cancers. Moreover, using systems pharmacology and bioactivity-guided fractionation, it is now possible to decipher the molecular mechanism of action of these potent anti-cancer herbs. An amalgamation of Ayurvedic systems and modern medicine put together as “Modern Ayurveda” is proving efficient in cancer therapy.
